The Ceremonial Fire Circle was a great example of Place based learning, we were able to light a fire with wood from our region and light it using techniques taught to us from different people in our lives. Fire has many purposes to many different cultures for warmth to protection and cooking fire has been mans companion from time in memoriam. Fire to me is the perfect example of teaching, there are different ways to build a fire, there are different types of fire that have different results, different parts of a fire can be used in different ways and almost everyone has a memory of fire. For me, fire is for cooking, you need the heat that fire produces to heat the cast iron cookware to produce amazing dishes. A fire can cook many different things at the same time, a potato in aluminum foil right inside the flames can be cooking while a chicken can be suspended over the fire at the same time vegetables can be roasting over embers to give them a charred taste. Fire brings out something primal in humans that crave comfort and security, it removed the walls we built around ourselves. This is what we should strive for in our classrooms, a safe place were people are free to be themselves.
