Digital Literacy is the ability to find, interpret and judge the validity of information found online. When I was teaching history I allowed phones in my class because I wanted my students to be able to search for, and understand information. Digital Literacy is not inherently a new skill, Human beings thrive on information and assessing in importance if information has always been important. Now we live in an era of information where anyone with a wifi connection can put their opinion online. I think we need to approach digital literacy like any other tool made by humans. It is as mystical as a wrench, or a hammer and we need to show students how to properly use them or they might bludgeon someone with it. The internet is one of the most powerful tools of learning that allows us to fill in gaps in information, but we have to be careful that those gaps are not filled by information that could ruin students understanding of a subject. As a learner there are many ways to use the internet to explore new topics, refresh knowledge and learn about the world around you. I think it can be very overwhelming to be online all the time and people can find that much information exhausting. Many experts in the video I linked basically say that same thing about digital literacy that I did, it the ability to process information and that is important because our students are always bombarded with information.
