I have been thinking about how to tackle AI in my classes when I teach again. I think the problem I face is not cheating per say, When I was teaching I wanted my students to learn how to find information, gather sources, and write papers by hand. If they use AI to create essays that defeats the purpose of being able to write your own point of view. I think what I want to try is showing them how to use AI as a tool rather than the writer of their essay. I think having an editor on hand is a great tool for anyone because you can re-read your work one hundred times and still miss something. I find that its better to teach students the right way to use something than let them how to figure things out by themselves. I would rather them learn how to use AI correctly than have to fail them because the work they did was not theirs. Even doing an assignment where they use AI to explain a topic than then go through it and see what errors they can find. I think the problem with that assignment is making sure we have the computers needed for a class like that and that the system doesn’t crash. I think it is safe to assume that AI is not going away so all we can do is mitigate the damage. The Video below was provided by Dr. Sandy Eix from science world and if it isn’t the goal we should set for all students I don’t know what is.
