Learning about Digital Citizenship is always an odd experience for me, I use digital media as a source of entrainment rather than a public diary. I live by the quote “I barely care what happens in my own life let allow someone else’s”. My general attitude towards a majority of social media as apathy. I have never found the appeal in it and I don’t want people to know about my life. I also raised by parents who were born in a very dangerous place so telling people personal information if very dangerous. We had our BCTF talk on what does your digital footprint look like and I was honestly confused why people choose to post their life online . Digital Citizenship is “the ability to navigate our digital environments in a way that’s safe and responsible and to actively and respectfully engage in these spaces.” says Canada’s center for digital media literacy. I can agree that we should teach students how to interact with digital landscapes in a safe way but we should also try to make our schools areas that can we havens from all that stimulus. I also believe that students should understand professional boundaries that come with a Fiduciary relationship. It is a safety issue, most of our students will enter or have already entered the work force and they need to understand that their employer has to follow boundaries that keep employee’s safe. If a student doesn’t understand boundaries they can end up being used or fired. I believe we should approach social media like any other kind of tool made by humanity, it can be used for good or for evil thats why we teach students to use hammers to hit nails and not fingers.
